Satan (also called Beelzebub/Beelzebul, the devil, and the evil/wicked one) is a demonic adversary of God.
Satan was originally created as a holy angel named “Lucifer” (Isaiah 14:12). However, he later rebelled against God by desiring to be like him; therefore, Lucifer was cast out of the 3rd heaven (Isaiah 14:12-17 and Ezekiel 28:10-19) and is now a demon known as Satan, a Hebrew word for “adversary”. Satan also led 1/3 of the other angels to sin; they too were cast out of the 3rd heaven and are now demons (Revelation 12:4). He temps people to sin, as he tempted Eve to sin in the Garden of Eden, causing “the fall” (Genesis 3). He tempted Job to curse God by stealing his children, servants, and wealth (Job 1), and afflicting him with sores (Job 2:7), but was prohibited from killing him. He accuses God’s people continually (Revelation 12:10), as he accused Joshua the high priest, but was rebuked by God (Zechariah 3:1-2). He unsuccessfully tempted Jesus to sin in the wilderness (Matthew 4:1-11 and Luke 4:1-12). He seeks to devour people (1 Peter 5:8), as he sifted Jesus’ apostles like wheat on the night of Jesus’ arrest (Luke 22:31). He led Ananias and Sapphira to lie to the Holy Spirit, and they died immediately afterwards (Acts 5:1-11). Satan is the “god of this age”, preventing unbelievers from seeing the light of the gospel (2 Corinthians 4:4). He is a deceiver and the “father of lies” (John 8:44), and shows himself as a holy angel (2 Corinthians 11:14). He attempts to diminish God’s work, as he did with the apostle Paul going to Thessalonica (1 Thessalonians 2:18). The wicked are his children (1 John 3:10). However, Satan’s works have been destroyed by Jesus (1 John 3:8), and he and his demons were publicly shamed when Jesus was crucified (Colossians 2:15). During the Tribulation, Satan will be cast out of the 3rd heaven for the final time, along with his demons (Revelation 12:9). At the beginning of the Millennial Kingdom, he will be bound in a bottomless pit (Revelation 20:1-3) to be prevented from deceiving anyone during that time. Finally, after leading the last battle, he will be cast into the lake of fire to suffer eternal punishment for his sins (Revelation 20:7-10).
Revelation 20:10: And the devil that deceived them was cast into the lake of fire and brimstone, where the beast and the false prophet are, and shall be tormented day and night for ever and ever.
