The 2 Great Commandments are to love God and love one’s neighbor.
Matthew 22:37: Jesus said unto him, Thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind.
Jesus Christ quotes the 1st great commandment from Deuteronomy 6:5. Loving God with all one’s heart, soul, and mind means keeping his commands (John 14:15, 21, and 23), obeying him before others (Acts 5:29), and seeking him (Jeremiah 29:13 and Hebrews 11:6). Accepting God as supreme, worshiping only him, honoring his name, and accepting his Sabbath rest are evidence of love for God (Exodus 20:3-7 and Hebrews 4:1-13).
Matthew 22:39: And the second is like unto it, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself.
Jesus Christ quotes the 2nd great commandment from Leviticus 19:18. Loving one’s neighbor means valuing others above oneself and thinking about others before oneself (Philippians 2:3-4). Honoring one’s parents and lack of murder, adultery, theft, false witness, and covetousness are evidence of love for neighbors (Exodus 20:12-17).
And thou shalt love the Lord thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy mind, and with all thy strength: this is the first commandment.
And the second is like, namely this, Thou shalt love thy neighbour as thyself. There is none other commandment greater than these.
